ME.
fifteen years ago...After my second kid was born, I gave up illusions of being a serious photojournalist and put down my medium format film camera, just before it got thrown into the sea (this nearly happened). The next best thing I found was the iPhone 4 I had thrown into a push chair as I was dragged around the play park.
I’m now on an iPhone 16 and been photographing daily life on my phone exclusively for all this time. Daily life has become the subject I am most passionate about and my phone the camera I am still excited to use everyday.
Most of this time I’ve been telling the story of my kids’ year. Using a recipe that I believe creates a compelling visual story every time.
It was however, becoming a bit lonely. And I would imagine all of the lives out there, all the ways in which we were all so different but all so really the same. I know that everyone has their story and everyone’s story is unique and interesting.
So, I thought, maybe there’s people out there who want to do this with me. One week at a time, one story at a time, until we all have a year worth telling.
Maybe, I could share everything I have learnt in these last twenty years. About photography, about phone photography, about stories. And in particular about daily life shot on your phone. I could be your photography guide as your year unfolds.
Up until now I have been using the handle @howtogrowaboy to post my images. You can find more of my work on Instagram and my website. I’m pretty slow paced on Instagram these days! And prefer to post regularly on Glass App, a community for photographers.
